Amman: The Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) until June 30, 2029. The resolution was backed by 144 countries, while 16 abstained. Eleven countries voted against: Israel, the United States, Fiji, Argentina, Micronesia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Palau, Tonga, Paraguay, and Papua New Guinea.
According to Jordan News Agency, the adoption of this resolution ensures the continuation of UNRWA's operations in support of Palestinian refugees. The agency provides essential services including education, healthcare, and social services to millions of refugees in the Middle East.
UNRWA's mandate renewal reflects the international community's commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees. The agency faces ongoing challenges, including financial constraints and political opposition from some member states, which were evident in the voting pattern of the resolution.
The UN Relief and Works Agency has been operational since 1949, initially established to assist Palestinian refugees displaced by the Arab-Israeli conflict. The renewed mandate will allow UNRWA to continue its work for another six years, addressing the needs of refugees in the region.
