UN Report Highlights Persistent ISIS-K Threat in Afghanistan

Kabul: The UN Security Council's (UNSC) Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team has released its 16th report, assessing the security situation in Afghanistan and highlighting the persistent threat posed by ISIS-K despite certain improvements in security. According to Anadolu Agency, the report indicates that while Afghanistan has achieved a degree of internal peace and domestic stability, serious security threats remain. The Afghan administration has managed to suppress, though not fully eliminate, the threat from ISIS/Daesh-Khorasan Province, commonly referred to as ISIS-K or ISIL-KP. The group continues to present significant threats within Afghanistan and beyond its borders. The report also addresses the activities of the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), noting that the group has carried out numerous high-profile attacks in Pakistan from Afghan territory. These actions have resulted in tensions along the border, loss of life, and trade disruptions. The de facto authorities in Afghanistan, howeve r, maintain that no terrorist groups operate from within their territory, a claim the report considers not credible. The report further highlights that a strong central rule has allowed the de facto authorities to make progress in various areas, including a remarkable decline of over 95% in poppy cultivation in 2025 compared to its peak under the Taliban in 2022. Additionally, while the Afghan economy shows resilience, it remains weak. Challenges persist, particularly in responding to the forced returns of Afghan citizens from neighboring countries and recent natural disasters.
