United nations: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres expressed deep sorrow on Wednesday over the recent floods in northern Pakistan, which have reportedly claimed more than 400 lives.
According to Jordan News Agency, Guterres noted that the disaster, caused by heavy monsoon rains and exacerbated by climate change, has affected around 1.5 million people, leaving hundreds of thousands in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The floods have damaged over 3,000 homes, 400 schools, and approximately 40 health facilities.
He commended Pakistani authorities for relocating over one million people in Punjab and extended solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan.
Guterres added that the UN and its partners are working closely with Pakistani authorities to rapidly assess the humanitarian impact, identify urgent needs, and address response gaps.
The Secretary-General also announced that UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has allocated $600,000 from the joint regional humanitarian fund to support relief and recovery efforts. Discussions with the government on a comprehensive response plan are ongoing.
