UNIFIL on Tuesday issued a statement regarding the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) notification of their intention to conduct limited ground incursions into Lebanon. 'In response to this dangerous development, UNIFIL peacekeepers remain in position, continuously adjusting their posture and activities while preparing contingency plans if necessary. The safety and security of peacekeepers is a top priority, and all parties are reminded of their obligation to uphold it. UNIFIL emphasizes that any incursion into Lebanon constitutes a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a breach of UN Resolution 1701.' In its statement, UNIFIL also urged all parties to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions, warning that the costs of continued aggression are too high. "Civilians must be protected, civilian infrastructure must not be targeted, and international law must be respected," the statement read. UNIFIL finally called on all parties to recommit to Security Council resolution s and Resolution 1701 (2006) as the only viable solution for restoring stability in the region.
