US-Canada Bilateral Trade Agreement Talks Signal Possible Breakthrough

Washington:US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in a series of phone discussions addressing the framework of a potential new bilateral trade agreement. This move indicates a possible resolution to the prolonged trade dispute between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Trump expressed optimism about the emerging deal, highlighting its benefits for American farmers and the overall economic relationship with Canada. He emphasized that the agreement aims to eliminate Canadian agricultural trade barriers that have imposed tariffs as high as 400% on US dairy products.

Further details of the agreement include Canada's commitment to financing the Keystone oil pipeline system, which will connect Canada and the US. Trump noted that the US has largely determined the pipeline's route and stated that Canada has agreed to cover the construction costs.

Carney shared his positive outlook on the discussions with Trump via the social media platform X, describing the talks as constructive and aimed at creating jobs, boosting affordability, and respecting Canada's cultural and sovereign aspects. He mentioned that negotiation teams from both countries would work closely to finalize the agreement in the coming weeks.

The talks come after a period of strained trade relations, with both countries imposing tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of goods due to previous negotiation breakdowns. However, recent remarks from Trump suggested that a deal with Canada is progressing, potentially ending the months-long trade tensions.
