Amman: Uzbek Ambassador to Jordan Nodirjon Turgunov has emphasized the dynamic development of Jordan-Uzbekistan relations, noting the strong foundation of mutual respect, trust, and historical connections between the two nations. In an interview with the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on the occasion of Uzbekistan's National Day, Turgunov highlighted the significance of His Majesty King Abdullah II's forthcoming visit to Uzbekistan in 2025, which is expected to be a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship. Following discussions between King Abdullah II and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, both countries have committed to elevating their ties to a comprehensive partnership.
According to Jordan News Agency, Turgunov stressed the importance of fully implementing the agreements reached during the high-level talks. He noted the organization of numerous visits by high-level delegations and meetings between senior officials from both countries, which reflect the shared vision and commitment of King Abdullah II and President Mirziyoyev toward economic modernization, investment attraction, education advancement, and regional stability. Additionally, the two leaders are keen on promoting intercultural dialogue and empowering youth.
Turgunov highlighted the ongoing political dialogue and cooperation between Uzbekistan and Jordan within international platforms such as the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Both countries share common positions on strengthening international law and supporting initiatives within these organizations. The ambassador reported a significant increase in bilateral trade, which reached approximately $8.6 million in 2025, with Uzbekistan's exports to Jordan amounting to $5.5 million and imports from Jordan totaling $3.1 million.
The ambassador pointed out that the first meeting of the Jordanian-Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission in April 2026 was a step forward in boosting business ties. The introduction of direct flights between Amman and Tashkent by Royal Jordanian and the reciprocal visa-free regime have further enhanced tourism and business interactions. Turgunov also mentioned potential charter flights between Tashkent and Aqaba, highlighting the tourism appeal of both countries.
Looking ahead, Turgunov identified promising opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, digitalization, and logistics. Cultural, educational, and scientific exchanges are also on the agenda, with the recent memorandum of cooperation between the Jordanian General Iftaa Department and the Fatwa Center of Uzbekistan serving as an example. The ambassador also expressed Uzbekistan's support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and called for an end to military operations in the Gaza Strip.
Discussing Uzbekistan's development, Turgunov outlined the "Uzbekistan-2030" Strategy, which aims to create a modern, competitive economy. Uzbekistan's GDP has surpassed $145 billion, with significant growth in exports and foreign investment. The country has undertaken broad reforms and is focusing on sustainable economic growth, innovation, and green energy initiatives. These efforts open new opportunities for international partners, including Jordan, to engage in investment and technology projects with Uzbekistan.
