Amman: Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Thursday witnessed the signing of a strategic agreement between the National Advanced Natural Gas Company (Watani) and Qatrana Cement Company. The agreement aims to supply and distribute natural gas to the Qatrana Cement plant, marking a significant step towards expanding natural gas usage in the industrial sector and offering more efficient energy solutions.
According to Jordan News Agency, the agreement was formalized with signatures from Watani Director General Khaled Al-Zoubi and Qatrana Cement CEO Amer Al-Khatib. The minister emphasized the agreement's alignment with the ministry's objectives to diversify energy sources, bolster energy security, and support both the national economy and the industrial sector in line with the Economic Modernization Vision.
Kharabsheh detailed ongoing efforts to extend the natural gas network to industrial areas, mentioning existing coverage in Al-Qastal and Al-Hashemiyah, and future expansions planned for Al-Rawdah in Ma'an and Al-Muwaqqar. Studies are underway for further expansion to Mafraq and Zarqa. Additionally, Kharabsheh noted efforts to explore and develop new energy solutions, reducing dependence on conventional energy sources, with Jordanian companies playing key roles across the natural gas supply chain.
Al-Zoubi described the agreement as a "strategic partnership" beyond a mere commercial relationship, underscoring Watani's dedication to supplying reliable energy solutions for the industrial sector. Al-Khatib highlighted the strategic decision to transition to natural gas as a means to enhance operational efficiency, diversify energy sources, and reduce costs, thereby securing long-term sustainability for the company.
Ziad Al-Saaydeh, Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, expressed support for projects transitioning to natural gas, emphasizing the provision of a regulatory and technical framework to ensure project safety and efficiency. He noted that such projects enhance energy security and competitiveness within the industrial sector.
Under the agreement, Watani will supply compressed natural gas (CNG) to the plant, adhering to specified quantities, delivery schedules, and regulatory requirements. The gas will primarily support electricity generation and industrial heating. The plant's initial annual gas needs are projected between 450,000 and 700,000 MMBTU, with consumption expected to grow over time.
Gas supplies are scheduled to commence in early 2027 following the completion of necessary technical and infrastructure works and obtaining the required approvals and licenses. The agreement also entails establishing an integrated gas reception system at the plant, involving storage tanks, pressure reduction equipment, and metering systems. The agreement will last five years from the initial gas delivery and will automatically renew under its terms, with ongoing approvals for related infrastructure and safety inspections.
