Karak: The Ministry of Water and Irrigation launched an awareness campaign for the first phase of implementing water harvesting wells in the southern Karak governorate. This initiative is part of the "Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan" project, aimed at improving water use efficiency in the agricultural sector.

According to Jordan News Agency, Dr. Jihad Mahameed, the Ministry's Secretary-General, announced that the project, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will span Karak city center, Qasr, Faqu', A'i, and Southern Mazar. The primary objective is to harvest rainwater, thereby achieving sustainability of water resources and reducing reliance on groundwater.

An electronic link (https://t.ly/rNBfq) has been established to inform citizens about the conditions, categories, and eligibility criteria for constructing rooftop rainwater harvesting wells in the governorate. Dr. Mahameed emphasized that the ministry's policy and strategy for 2023-2040 focuses on achieving water resource sustainability.

Jordan is currently confronting pressures from climate change, the influx of Syrian refugees, depletion of groundwater resources, and a disparity between water availability and demand. Dr. Mahameed highlighted these challenges while advocating for a national culture that promotes water conservation and praising the collaboration with UNDP for its support in the water sector.

Majida Assaf, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, stressed the partnership's importance with the ministry and various national and international partners. She confirmed the programme's commitment to supporting Jordan's efforts in achieving water security and fostering sustainable development.
