WHO Urges Global Pact on Pandemic Preparedness

Geneva: World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that it is crucial to establish a global agreement on pandemics, emphasizing that “if it doesn’t happen now, it will never happen.”

According to Jordan News Agency, Ghebreyesus made these remarks during the opening of the 13th round of negotiations at the WHO headquarters in Geneva on Monday. He highlighted that no country can tackle the next pandemic on its own.

He further noted the importance of remembering the lessons from COVID-19, which resulted in nearly 20 million deaths and continues to pose a threat. The negotiations aim to protect future generations from the impact of future pandemics.

The goal of these discussions is to finalize the agreement before the World Health Assembly’s annual meeting in May. In December, WHO member states agreed to draft an agreement focused on pandemic prevention and preparedness to prevent the significant errors observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
