Amman: Yarmouk University (YU) launched on Sunday the "Women in Political Parties: Toward Effective Leadership" project, organized by the Princess Basma Center for Women's Studies in cooperation with Nahnu Center for Sustainable Development and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-Jordan Office. The initiative aims to foster women's participation and leadership in Jordanian political parties.
According to Jordan News Agency, Secretary-General Ali Khawaldeh, deputizing for the Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, emphasized the crucial role of civil society institutions and universities in encouraging citizen engagement, particularly among women and youth, within the Kingdom's political process. He called on political parties in Jordan to empower women and include them as vital decision-makers, supporting national ambitions.
Khawaldeh highlighted Jordan's political evolution and the commitment to women's political empowerment through legislative developments. Currently, women constitute 44% of the membership in Jordanian political parties, indicating progress in political inclusion.
YU President Islam Massad remarked that the project embodies the university's belief in women as "essential partners" in crafting a promising future, praising the initiative as a "strategic step to build a vibrant political life that promotes inclusive participation." He also emphasized the university's dedication to raising youth awareness about community engagement and political involvement, as well as its commitment to empowering women across various fields.
Director General of We Rise Center for Sustainable Development, Amer Abudalo, stated that the project aims to surpass traditional empowerment by reshaping women's political engagement. He described the partnership with the Princess Basma Center as a national alliance focused on promoting strong female leadership across different sectors.
The launch event included a panel discussion titled "Four Years Since the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System: Where Do Jordanian Women Stand Today?" featuring MP Hala Jarrah, Khawaldeh, Independent Election Commission Commissioner Abeer Dababneh, and Princess Basma Center Director Batoul Muhaisen, moderated by Deputy Director Tareq Naser.
The event was attended by MPs Abdul Nasser Khasawneh, Shahir Shatnawi, and Tareq Bani Hani, along with university vice presidents Mousa Rabab'ah and Fadia Mayyas, academic and administrative staff, and members of the local community.
