Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday declared that the reunification of Taiwan with China is "unstoppable," following the conclusion of Beijing's two-day military drills around the island. Xi emphasized the shared bond between people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in his New Year address, stating that the reunification is a "trend of the times."
According to Anadolu Agency, the military exercises, named Justice Mission 2025, were launched on Monday shortly after the United States approved a substantial arms sale to Taipei, valued at over $11 billion. China views Taiwan as a "breakaway province," whereas Taipei has maintained its independence since 1949. Xi highlighted the global changes and turbulence, expressing China's readiness to collaborate with other nations to foster peace and development.
In his address, Xi also underscored China's accomplishments in economic and technological advancement as it nears the completion of its 14th Five-Year Plan in 2025. He projected that China's gross domestic product (GDP) will reach 140 trillion yuan (approximately $20.01 trillion) in 2025, noting the country's growing economic strength and technological capabilities. Xi pointed to significant achievements, such as advancements in artificial intelligence, chip development, and the commissioning of Fujian, China's first aircraft carrier with an electromagnetic catapult system.
Looking forward to 2026 and the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan, Xi stressed the importance of maintaining focus on goals, boosting confidence, and promoting high-quality development. He called for continued reform and opening up, aiming to deliver prosperity for all and to add a new chapter to China's development narrative.
