Brussels: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the European Union for adopting its 17th sanctions package against Russia. Zelenskyy conveyed his appreciation to President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the entire EU, describing the sanctions as a step toward the right direction. This acknowledgment followed a phone conversation with von der Leyen, with Zelenskyy sharing his thoughts on X, a social media platform.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of imposing stringent restrictions on Russia, focusing particularly on what he referred to as Russia's "tanker fleet." He claimed that these tankers finance violent actions and support Russia's military industry. Zelenskyy argued that increased pressure on Russia would provide Moscow with stronger incentives to pursue genuine peace.
The Ukrainian president mentioned discussions with von der Leyen regarding preparations for an 18th sanctions package by the EU. He noted that areas such as oil, energy trade infrastructure, banks, and financial schemes are crucial, as they significantly impact Russia and contribute to peace efforts.
Zelenskyy also highlighted recent conversations with former US President Donald Trump and ongoing diplomatic efforts with partners, stressing the importance of Europe's involvement and close coordination in these initiatives. Earlier statements from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas revealed that the 17th sanctions package targets nearly 200 ships associated with Russia's "shadow fleet."
