Ex-French president gets jail sentence over campaign funding

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to a year in prison for illegally funding his unsuccessful 2012 re-election campaign.

The 66-year-old was found guilty in a Paris court of spending tens of millions of euros more on his campaign than was permitted under the law.

He will not be jailed, however, and can serve his sentence at home with an electronic bracelet, the court ruled.

Sarkozy denies any wrongdoing and is expected to appeal against the ruling.

Palestinian killed by Israeli forces in Gaza

A 41-year-old Palestinian man was killed Thursday morning by Israeli occupation fire, east of al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources.

The occupation troops opened fire against the Palestinian man while he was hunting birds east of the camp, leaving him dead, the sources said, noting that the ambulance crews transferred the body to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central of the costal enclave.

Tunisia: 5 new coronavirus fatalities, 489 cases

The Tunisian Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that 5 new COVID-19 deaths and 489 new infections were registered during the last 24 hours.

A statement by the Ministry said that the new fatalities raised the death toll in the country to 24,868 since the pandemic struck in March 2020, while the total number of cases climbed to 706,804.

Jordan sees 8 COVID-19 fatalities, 1, 027 new cases Thursday: MoH

The Ministry of Health announced 8 Covid-19 fatalities and 1, 027 new cases were recorded in the Kingdom on Thursday, bringing the death toll to 10,718 and the caseload to 823,919.

To date, there are currently 12,456 cases countrywide, according to the media statement issued by the Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Health.

The statement added that the number of patients who were admitted to hospitals today stood at 62, while 67 cases have recovered and discharged.

According to the briefing, the total number of recoveries recorded Thursday, whether at hospitals or at home, stood at 709 bringing the total to 800,745 since the outbreak began.

Moreover, the number of Covid-19 patients still receiving treatment at hospitals countrywide has reached 451.

The statement also indicated that occupancy of ICU beds in the northern, central and southern regions, has reached 19%, 21%, and 11%, respectively.

With regard to testing, 31,384 tests were conducted Thursday, 3.27 per cent of which were positive.

Since last March, the total number of tests administered has increased to 10,074,026, the joint statement noted.

The statement also added that the total number of people who received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine has reached 3,713,321 and 3,288,984 have received their second shot.

Health minister inaugurates Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Center

Minister of Health, Dr. Firas Hawari, on Thursday inaugurated the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Center accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA), which was established by the Ministry of Health with support of US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hawari stressed the need to support the newly-launched center to be a training nucleus to all Jordanian hospitals and health directorates, on the basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation program, and contribute to improving the quality of health services , especially in emergency wards.

The ministry, in a press statement, said the training center, which is supervised by the Nursing Directorate at the Ministry of Health, aims to develop life support skills for all medical and nursing staff training teams and support medical professions, to deal with sudden cardiac arrest cases and provide urgent medical care for emergency vascular cases within the global standards.

The new center will prepare a future plan to train about 3000 beneficiaries from all health staff in the near future, which includes the center’s basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation program, in addition to the ACLS programs for adults, and the PALS program for children later, the statement added.

The statement indicated that the Local Health System Sustainability Project (LHSS), a USAID’s flagship initiative in integrated health systems strengthening, contributed to training 450 resident doctors, nurses and health cadres working in the Ministry of Health’s hospitals, including field ones.

The LHSS, implemented simultaneously with the inauguration of the resuscitation training center, was provided with modern training materials during 2020, which include books and educational videos, the statement noted.

The new center has 8 trainers, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) at the “required” level. All training courses are directly run by AHA-accredited nurse coordinators to follow up the training procedures within the “latest” international standards to ensure training quality to achieve the “desired” goals, aimed to preserving the citizens’ lives in sudden cardiac arrest cases, the statement added.

Autumn weather forecast for weekend

Fair autumn weather is forecast in most areas of the country during the weekend, while it will be relatively hot in the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley and Aqaba, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Thursday.

At night, cooler weather will prevail in the hilly areas, but it will continue to be pleasant in the Badia, the Jordan Valley and Aqaba, with northwesterly moderate winds.

Similar weather conditions will prevail on Friday and Saturday despite a slight rise in temperatures, with clouds appearing at low altitudes.

Today, the highs in Amman and other highlands across the Kingdom will range between 28 and 24 degrees Celsius. In the late afternoon and evening hours, cooler weather is forecast as mercury levels slide to 17C or even 12C in the southern highlands.

In the port city of Aqaba, daytime temperatures will stand at 34 degrees, while lows will slide to 24C at night.

Jordan partakes in WB conference

Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh and a number of municipalities’ officials and governors took part on Wednesday in a conference organized by the World Bank (WB) entitled “MENA Cities at the Forefront of Climate Action: The Time is Now.”

Shawarbeh’s participation came as a speaker in two sessions: the cities, economic growth and climate change, and the actionable pathways towards climate-smart cities in MENA.

During the conference, speakers highlighted that urban areas must now look towards innovative green growth solutions, adding that the physical and economic density of cities can provide the impetus for technological change and infrastructure investments that support low carbon economic development. Discussions also dealt with the key role cities play in formulating and implementing effective climate action.

The event brought together mayors and governors from the MENA region as well as international global experts to discuss climate change as a challenge and an opportunity for development and economic growth at the city level.
