The prime minister Tuesday called for the implementation of the defence orders put in place to counter the COVID-19 pandemic and the ramping up of inspections in private and public institutions.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh held a meeting of the “higher framework committee on the coronavirus pandemic” amidst a rise in the number of daily COVID-19 cases.

Khasawneh said it falls on individuals and institutions to keep the country open and keep the economy going without disruptions towards full recovery.

He emphasised the need to keep the momentum of the vaccination campaign so that it would target more people, and he highlighted the importance of the booster shot to protect people from the highly contagious lung disease.

Feras Hawari, the health minister, briefed the committee on the developments in COVID-19 and the notable increase in the number and percentage of daily positive PCR tests.

Hawari underlined his ministry’s response plan to the rising number of COVID-19 infections, highlighting the vast majority of COVID patients had not received a vaccine.

House Speaker pledges to address farmers’ demands

Lower House Speaker Abdul Karim Doghmi Tuesday pledged to address demands to enhance the agricultural sector, and said he will reach out to the government to solve outstanding issues.

He told owners of unlicensed agricultural water wells, who staged sit-in protests outside the parliament building, that the agricultural sector is of priority to His Majesty the King and uplifting it is a goal to achieve food security and raise the gross domestic product.

“It is of prime importance today to bolster strategies to enhance the agricultural sector,” he told the farmers.

Jordan, Doghmi noted, was in the past a wheat producer known for its quality product that was exported to other countries, adding that it is necessary to come up with thorough plans to address all challenges that led to the farming sector’s decline.

Commission bans ‘Eternals’ from cinemas over inappropriate scenes

The Jordan Media Commission (JMC) on Tuesday decided to ban Marvel’s Eternals movie from screening in local cinemas, after the film’s manufacturer and distributor refused to abide by the commission’s conditions.

According to a statement, the JMC said that the film manufacturer refused a request to delete a few scenes that do not comply with the Audiovisual Media Law, and refused to change the age rating.

The decision was based on the provisions of Article (7/b) of the Audiovisual Literature System and its Monitoring No. 63 of 2004 and its amendments, which states: “Any part of a literature that violates any of the censorship conditions stipulated in Article 4 of this system shall be banned from screening.”

Tobacco use falling globally, WHO report says, 3rd, final add

The data behind these estimates are from 1728 national surveys run by countries between 1990 and 2020, which together asked 97% of the world’s population about their tobacco use. Article 20 of the WHO FCTC underlines the importance of running surveys to obtain evidence of the tobacco epidemic, and now 190 countries have run at least one national survey – up from 140 in 2004 when the treaty was not yet in force. WHO and partners have made a large contribution to filling the data gaps in low- and middle-income countries via the Global Tobacco Surveillance System surveys, the STEPS survey and the World Health Survey.

Highlights from the Global Investment Case for Tobacco Cessation

To meet global targets in reducing tobacco use, cessation services need to be scaled up, along with strengthening tobacco control measures. Offering cessation services can accelerate the downward trend in tobacco use prevalence, saving more lives and protecting the health of more people.

Population-level cessation interventions include brief advice, national toll-free quit lines, and mCessation (support through mobile phone text messaging). These interventions cost very little yet deliver significant returns on investment within 10 years. Pharmacologic interventions including nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), Bupropion, and Varenicline are more expensive but are proving effective.

Data from 124 low- and middle-income countries are used to generate the analysis.

Jordan, UNRWA talk drumming support for UN agency

Jordan’s foreign minister and UNRWA commissioner-general Tuesday held a joint press conference following the international ministerial conference to support the UN agency where they emphasised the importance of supporting UNRWA.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi said the conference bears witness to the international community’s commitment to supporting UNRWA so that it can continue offering its “vital” services for Palestinian refugees, highlighting the importance of the support sustainability.

Safadi highlighted Jordan will continue working with all partners to ensure sufficient support for UNRWA that is suffering from a deficit, adding that today’s meeting pledges support for the coming years.

He noted that UNRWA should keep offering its support for Palestinians until a solution has taken place. He said that an accepted solution must guarantee the right to return for Palestinian refugees and the establishment of a Palestinian state on the June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He highlighted that the attendance of representatives of 60 countries and international organisation bodes well, stressing today saw unprecedented financial commitments.

For his part, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini said the UN agency welcomes the commitments to support UNRWA, which will reduce the deficit that is estimated to be around USD 100 million for November and December.

He highlighted that to keep running, UNRWA needs at least USD 800 million every year, saying that the UN agency’s services are vital for Palestinian refugees. He stressed that without it the entire region could be under threat.

Queen Rania, Duchess of Cornwall visit family, child centre

Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah and HRH Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, Tuesday visited the Queen Rania Family and Child Centre (QRFCC) in East Amman, where the Queen introduced the Duchess to the centre’s women and children empowerment programmes.

The Duchess is accompanying her husband, HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, on a trip to Jordan celebrating Jordan’s centenary as well as 100 years of UK-Jordan friendship.

The visit marks the couple’s first major overseas tour since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Run by the Jordan River Foundation (JRF), the QRFCC was established in 2005 under the foundation’s Child Safety Programme, which promotes child protection and wellbeing. The community-based centre, located in the Jabal Al Nasr neighborhood, offers holistic services to combat child abuse and strengthen family unity.

Her Majesty and the Duchess were welcomed to the centre by JRF Director General Enaam Barrishi, who took them on a guided-tour of the centre’s programmes and interventions targeting children, youth and women.

Their first stop was at “Beit Sgheer,” or “My Little Home,” a simulated home environment using hands-on activities to teach children and parents the basics of healthy home dynamics, positive childcare practices, and child abuse prevention measures.

Queen Rania and Duchess Camilla observed as young children moved between the six different rooms of the “Little Home,” performing a different interactive activity at each station. The simulation encourages children to develop a sense of agency and independent decision-making skills, and to discover their purpose and potential.

The Queen and Duchess next proceeded to QRFCC’s Creative Space, where they joined a group of adolescent girls in a session on building self-esteem and assertiveness. Activities held in the Creative Space include a range of basic life skills and expressive art workshops benefiting both girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 17.

In the center’s courtyard, the Queen and Duchess stopped by a small exhibition of local Jordan River Design handicrafts, meeting a group of the women artisans who handcrafted the items as part of JRF’s Social Enterprises project.

The items on display included several from a collection launched in collaboration with multinational furniture group IKEA, which currently sells the Jordanian collection in a number of its stores around the world.

The women explained how the foundation’s employment and training programs have transformed their lives by enabling them to earn a living through their handicrafts, and empowering them to support their families.

Queen Rania and Duchess Camilla also sat in on an expressive art therapy session for survivors of gender-based violence. They joined the survivors in making hand prints from clay, which were gifted to the QRFCC to commemorate their visit.

Launched in 2016, JRF’s Expressive Art program offers a healing outlet for female victims of different forms of violence, helping them overcome their trauma and set their life goals.

JRF also runs a toll-free Families and Children Helpline, which provides children and adults with emotional support, assistance, and referral services, linking families to existing services at QRFCC or to other relevant public services.

Launched in 2007, the helpline is part of the global Child Helpline International (CHI) network, and is reachable in Jordan at the number “110.”

JRF is a non-governmental organization established in 1995 with a focus on both child safety and community empowerment. Chaired by Queen Rania, the foundation provides home-grown solutions to some of Jordan’s most pressing challenges, and works to ensure the implementation of child rights and the reinforcement of positive child-rearing methods within families in Jordan.
