Fair weather forecast today, unstable conditions tomorrow

Fair weather conditions are expected to prevail countrywide on Monday as temperatures slightly rise, with clouds at medium and high altitudes and southeasterly moderate winds, the Jordan Meteorology Department (JMD) said.

Similar weather will persist on Tuesday morning, but as we head into evening hours, a slight drop in mercury levels is expected with unstable weather conditions affecting the Kingdom and causing rainfall in the northern regions.

On Wednesday, temperatures will significantly drop bringing cold and partly cloudy weather conditions, with scattered showers in the eastern and southern parts of the country, the JMD added.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across Jordan today will range between 22 and 19 degrees Celsius, dropping at night to 9C or even 7C in the southern highlands. In the Gulf city of Aqaba, it will be warmer with mercury reaching a high of 26C and a low of 17C.

Qatari minister visits Al-Hussein Social Foundation

Qatari Minister of Social Development and Family, Mariam Al-Misnad, on Monday visited the Al-Hussein Social Foundation in Amman.

Accompanied by Minister of Social Development, Ayman Mufleh, Al-Misnad toured the foundation, and were briefed by its director, Amal Rihani, on the foundation’s services and programs provided to beneficiaries, highlighting its establishment and alternative care programs it provides.

The two ministers met with children benefiting from the foundation, who recited poems, national songs and a theatrical performance, as well as a commemorative plaque of their own making to the guest minister.

The two ministers inaugurated the Al-Baraem Department, which is designated to look after children from one to three years of age. Its establishment aims to give adequate time and care to these children to ensure their right to play and laugh.

Minister Al-Misnad presented the shield of the Qatari Ministry of Social Development and Family to Minister Mufleh.

Dialogue session on Gulf region’s security in Amman concludes

A security dialogue session on the Gulf region’s security, hosted by the Arab Institute for Security Studies in Amman, has recently concluded, according to a statement issued Monday by the institute.

Attended by academics and experts from several countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iran, the discussion focused on security and technical issues, which included reducing the threat of missiles and delivery vehicles and technical measures needed to build confidence towards Iran’s nuclear program and cooperation on nuclear fuel among other issues.

The dialogue session was held in an atmosphere of mutual respect and a desire of both parties to enhance regional stability, said Ayman Khalil, Secretary-General of the Arab Institute for Security Studies.

It is noted that the Arab Institute for Security Studies is one of a few Middle East-based think tanks focusing on WMD and nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear security issues.

Israel to build new Jewish settlements in occupied Jerusalem

The so-called Guardian General’s Unit in the Israeli Justice Ministry is advancing mega plans for the construction of new Jewish settlements in occupied East Jerusalem, an Israeli daily reported Monday.

New designs had been put forward to build Jewish neighbourhoods and complexes in Sheikh Jarrah, one near Damascus Gate, two in Beit Safafa and one each in Beit Hanina and Sur Baher, which would see Palestinian families evicted from their homes, according to documents obtained by Haaretz newspaper.

It said that Palestinian families that lived for decades in properties run by the Guardian General’s Unit will be driven out under the new scheme.

Industry minister opens Jordanian industry fair in Baghdad

Deputizing for Prime Minister Bisher Khaswaneh, Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yousef Shamali inaugurated Monday the Jordanian industry fair in Baghdad, in which 95 Jordanian companies are participating.

During his stay in Baghdad, the minister will meet with a number of Iraqi ministers and officials to discuss economic cooperation, ways to cement the two-way trade and prospects for building a joint economic estate on the two countries’ borders.

The minister will also meet representatives of the Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) and Jordanian companies participating in the fair.

Gov’t, USAID sign 2 agreements worth $597m of US support to Kingdom

The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the USAID mission to Jordan on Monday signed two development aid agreements at a total value of $597 million as part of the $1.2 billion US economic assistance to the Kingdom for the 2021 fiscal year.

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh and USAID Jordan Mission Director Sherry Carlin signed the agreements, according to statement issued by the ministry.

Under one of the agreements, the US government will transfer the second and final installment, $245 million, of a $845 million US cash grant to the Kingdom in 2021.

The second agreement sets out how the USAID, in partnership with the Jordanian government and the private sector, will spend $352 million of grants, directed to stimulate the economic recovery and support the health, education and social services.

Shraideh highlighted the importance of cash grants in funding priority development projects in areas of public finance, water, education, health, public works, housing, energy, mineral wealth, local administration, tourism, antiquities and youth, adding that such funding would support economic recovery by reducing budget deficit.

He expressed the gratitude and appreciation of the government of Jordan to the US government and the American people for their continuous support for Jordan, saying it “reflects the close ties between the two sides and the strategic partnership that governs this relationship”.

For her part, the USAID Jordan Mission Director said that such agreements aims at supporting Jordan’s economic stability and enabling the government to promote economic growth, pledging that the US government will remain committed to supporting Jordan.
