Next Tuesday to mark winter solstice

Tuesday, December 21, will mark the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and the start of marbaniyeh, the local name given to the 40 coldest days of winter, according to Astronomer Imad Mujahed of the Wadi Rum Observatory.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Tuesday, Mujahed said that following the first day of winter, days will start to become longer and nights shorter, until they become equal again on March 20, which marks the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere.

“Multiple depressions, very cold weather and dry easterly winds are characteristics of marbaniyeh, during which several frost spells take hold of the country due to the low temperatures and very cold winds,” he added.

Unstable weather conditions to bring rain over coming days

Weather conditions on Tuesday are forecast to be pleasant at day time, with clouds at medium and high altitudes and southeasterly moderate winds, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily update.

As we head into night hours, a slight drop in mercury levels is expected with unstable weather conditions affecting the Kingdom and causing rainfall in the northern regions. The rain will extend later to cover the central and southwestern parts, accompanied by thunder and westerly moderate to brisk winds.

The weather department warned of slippery roads in the areas experiencing rain, low-visibility during rainfall due to dust formation in badia areas and fog formation in mountainous areas.

On Wednesday, temperatures will significantly drop bringing cold and partly cloudy weather conditions, with scattered showers in most parts of the country, the JMD added.

Similar weather conditions will persist on Thursday and Friday, with southwesterly moderate winds, picking up at times.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across Jordan today will range between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, dropping at night to 7C or even 6C in the southern highlands. In the Gulf city of Aqaba, it will be warmer with mercury reaching a high of 26C and a low of 15C.
