Qatar reports some 4,000 daily COVID infections, one fatality

The Qatar health authorities Monday reported one COVID-19 death and some 4,000 infections, 517 of which are among new arrivals to the country.

The Ministry of Public Health said close to 2,879 Qataris recovered from the highly contagious respiratory disease, as the total recoveries in the GCC country tops 260,000.

UK reports 85 COVID fatalities

The UK’s health department Monday reported 85 COVID-19 deaths, taking the death toll to 152,075.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said some 84,430 Britons tested positive for the highly contagious lung disease, as the caseload tops 15.3 million.

Agricultural Producers’ Price Index down 10pct in 2021

The Prices Index of Agricultural Producers dropped by 10 percent during the January-November period of 2021 reaching 102.4 points compared with 113.8 points during the same period of 2020.

According to data issued by the Department of Statistics on Monday, the Index dropped by 21.7 percent in November of this year reaching 107.7 points compared with 137.6 points during the same month of 2020.

King visits Jordan Valley farms; urges support for farmers to increase production, exports

His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday visited three farms that utilise modern agricultural methods in the northern and central Jordan Valley.

During a tour of the farms, one of which is owned by the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army, King Abdullah commended the efforts exerted by the farm owners and highlighted the ability of Jordanian farmers to compete regionally and globally.

His Majesty urged the Ministry of Agriculture to support farmers and small farming projects to increase their production capacity and export levels, noting the value of learning from global experiences while taking into account local needs.

The King stressed the importance of food security and boosting national food reserves, as well as adopting modern cost-effective farming methods in the Jordan Valley.

All three farms utilise modern agricultural methods to bolster production, meeting local market demand and exporting to Arab and foreign markets.

PM meets Iraqi Business Council team

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh met on Monday head of the Iraqi Business Council Majid Al-Saadi and council members, and pledged to remove barriers to investment in the Kingdom.

During the meeting, which was attended by Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yousef Shamali, Minister of Investment Khairy Amr, Iraqi Ambassador Haider Al-Adhari and President of the Jordan Chamber of Industry, Fathi Jaghbir, the Prime Minister stressed the “positive” role of the Iraqi Business Council in enhancing Jordanian-Iraqi economic ties.

He noted that His Majesty King Abdullah attached great importance to investment and seeks to bolster relations with Iraq in the various fields at the bilateral level and as part of three-way cooperation between Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, voicing the hope to speed up joint ventures.

The Prime Minister noted the Iraqi Parliament’s approval of a framework agreement on a pipeline project that will carry Iraqi crude from the southern Iraqi city of Basra to the Red Sea port of Aqaba, in addition to expediting work on an industrial zone on the Jordanian-Iraqi border. He also pointed to a recent Jordanian industrial fair in Baghdad, which “reflected the deep economic relations between the two countries.”

Khasawneh reiterated his government will take down investment barriers to lure in Arab and foreign capital and work to save troubled projects, while empowering the private sector to enhance existing investments “in a manner to raise GDP and help curb unemployment.

For his part, Al-Saadi said that Jordan is an investment magnet, where officials are keen on meeting Iraqi businessmen to remove barriers facing them, noting that despite the repercussions of Covid-19, Iraqi investments in the Kingdom remained stable with an interest to expand them.

He called for cutting red tape and simplifying investment legislation.

Jordan condemns Houthi militia drone attack in UAE

Jordan Monday inveighed against a drone attack orchestrated by the Houthi militia against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that claimed the lives of the three and injured several others.

Haitham Abo Alfoul, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, reiterated “Jordan’s strong condemnation and denouncement of the cowardice terrorist attack.”

He said, “Jordan stands in complete solidarity with the brothers in the United Arab Emirates and that its security is part and parcel of Jordan’s.”

Abu Alfoul expressed his “heartfelt” sympathies to the families of the victims and wished for a speedy recovery for the wounded.

King condemns terrorist attack on UAE

His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday condemned the cowardly drone terrorist attack by the Houthi militia against civilian targets in the United Arab Emirates, which killed a number of victims and injured others.

In a phone call with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and the deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, King Abdullah stressed Jordan’s support for the UAE in countering threats to its security and stability.

His Majesty expressed condolences over the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Jordan condemns Israel forced displacement of Palestinians

Jordan Monday condemned the Israeli authorities’ attempt to displace a Palestinian family from their home in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, Jerusalem.

Haitham Abu Afoul, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, said the forced displacement of Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem is a “flagrant” violation of international law.

Abu Alfoul that the Israeli authorities are obliged under the international law to protect the rights of Palestinians to their homes and property.

He added that the continued Israeli violations, not the least of which are confiscating lands, displacing and the demolition of homes, entrench the occupation and undermine the two-state solution.

Lebanese Social Affairs Minister visits Social Development Ministry, National Aid Fund

Lebanese Minister of Social Affairs, Hector Hajjar, accompanied by Minister of Social Development Ayman Mufleh, was briefed on services provided by the Ministry of Social Development and the National Aid Fund in the center and the field.

Hajjar was also briefed on the work of the Al Hussein Social Foundation, the New Hope Center for Multiple Disabilities, the Juvenile Welfare Home in Rusaifa, and the National Aid Fund office in Al Hashmiyah in Zarqa.

Mufleh and his Lebanese counterpart held a meeting at the National Aid Fund building, where minister was briefed on the fund and the ministry’s work.

The two ministers discussed the possibility of exchanging of expertise between the two countries, and how Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs can benefit from the Ministry of Social Development expertise, in the care, protection, family integration, people with disabilities and shelter alternatives domains, as well as work mechanisms of the National Aid Fund in the field of granting monthly and emergency aid, programs in all its forms, and the Fund’s services, during the Covid-19 pandemic, which the fund is implementing.

The two ministers also discussed renewing the cooperation agreement between the two ministries and leveraging programs and activities implemented in each of them.

The Lebanese minister checked on automation programs in the National Aid Fund, and the importance of transferring the experience to Lebanon, as well as reviewing a field model starting from the registration of aid until it is disbursed electronically through the Fund’s branch in the Al Hashmiyah area in Zarqa.

Jordanian citizen injured in Saudi Arabia evacuated under Royal directives

Under Royal directives, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti on Monday instructed the commander of the Royal Air Force to dispatch a medical evacuation plane to Saudi Arabia to bring back a Jordanian citizen who had suffered a critical medical condition in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Rasmi Ahmed Al-Ali Al-Sakran will be transferred to the King Hussein Medical Center to complete his treatment.
