Lebanon’s Harari resigns from politics

Lebanon’s previous prime minister Saad Hariri Monday announced he intends to suspend his political career and urged “Future Movement,” which was founded in 2007 by Hariri, not to field candidates into the elections.

 

Hariri said in a televised speech: “We will remain in service to our family, people and country, but we decide to suspend our direct role and responsibility in power, legislature and politics.”

 

“The prevention of an eruption of civil war forced me to make settlements that came at my expense,” he added.

 

Hariri had held the office of prime minister for three times since the assassination of his father Rafic Hariri in 2005.

Reviewing Audit Bureau clarifications monitored in 2021 concluded: Minister

The team tasked with reviewing the documented clarifications at the Audit Bureau on Monday concluded the review of all violations that were monitored in 2021.

 

In a meeting, held at the Prime Ministry, Minister of State for Prime Ministry Affairs, Ibrahim Jazi, said the team completed the review of documented clarifications for the past year within the monthly-review approach framework, and took all necessary actions to rectify these violations.

 

He explained that procedures for rectifying violations were conducted in accordance with the rules, whether by addressing concerned authorities in which violations were monitored and obligating them to amend them within specific periods, or by taking legal actions. He pointed out that there are cases that called for referring some violations to the Jordan Integrity and Anti-corruption commission (JIACC) or to court, if mandating reasons were available.

 

“The total number of violations that were monitored, rectified and referred to the JIACC or the court will be revealed during the coming period, and after monitoring the overall of that were rectified during the past months,” Jazi added.

 

He noted that the monthly-review approach of the Audit Bureau clarifications will continue at the same pace, and at January end, the team will begin reviewing violations that it monitored. He stressed that this process has significantly contributed to reducing the number of violations, preventing their accumulation, and strengthening control over public money and public administration.

Senate Jordan-Japan Friendship League meets with Japanese envoy

Senator Nasser Judeh, president of the Jordan-Japan Friendship League in the Senate, lauded as “historical” the relationship between Jordan and Japan in various fields and at all levels.

 

Speaking to a league meeting with Japan’s ambassador to Jordan, Shimazaki Kaoru, Judeh discussed the on-going political consultations between the two countries, serving common issues, pointing out to King Abdullah’s keenness to encourage investment and cooperation at all levels, including education, culture and technology.

 

He commended Japan’s role and support for Jordan in all fields, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Japan’s support for Jordanian stances, especially towards the Palestinian issue, in addition to common stances between the two countries to realize a stable and secure region.

 

For his part, the Japanese ambassador lauded the bilateral relations and said both countries see eye-to-eye on common political issues, pointing out to Jordan’s pivotal role, under the leadership of His Majesty the King to bring peace to the region.

 

Members of the league, in turn, called for intensifying efforts and raising the level of coordination between the two countries, to include various possible fields of cooperation, including tourism, especially medical and religious ones, and opening up horizons for investment sectors such as industry and the digital economy.

Korean experts visit BAU

Experts at the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Korean universities on Monday visited the Al-Balqa’ Applied University (BAU) to follow up on the implementation of the project to develop middle university degree programs in Irbid and Karak university colleges.

 

In a meeting with the Korean experts, BAU President, Ahmed Ajlouni, underlined the importance of the joint project between the BAU, KOICA and Dong-a University to serve the university and its students, lauding the KOICA’s support for the university.

 

The expert team’s visit program includes holding intensive training courses to develop educational materials for courses offered within the developed programs, reviewing the various course plans and reviewing the progress in the buildings associated with the project and career development centers.

 

The BAU had signed an agreement with KOICA to develop technical education at the university, with an estimated cost of $10 million, including $6 million as a grant from the KOICA and $4 million in self-financing from the university to establish and rehabilitate its facilities and Karak and Irbid colleges’.

PSD denies death of Syrian girl due to cold in Zaatari camp

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) denied reports that a Syrian girl inside the Zaatari camp had died due to the cold.

 

PSD spokesperson disregard as “baseless” and “untrue” information circulated via social media on the death of a Syrian girl the Zaatari camp due to the bitter cold.

 

The spokesperson called on the public not to re-publish news or information before referring to official sources, stressing that publishers of such fake news, which aim to stir panic and fear in Syrian refugee camps, will be pursued, identified and referred to court.

JU official, Hungarian envoy discuss academic cooperation

The University of Jordan (JU) Vice President for International Relations, Quality and Accreditation, Zaid Eyadat, on Monday met with Cultural Attaché of the Hungarian Embassy in Amman, Regina Suranyi, on means of academic cooperation between the two parties.

 

The two sides discussed mechanisms for enhancing joint cooperation in academic and cultural fields, and the possibility of developing joint academic and research programs, student and faculty members exchange programs between the JU and Hungarian universities.

 

Eyadat said the JU is keen on developing cooperative relations with Hungarian higher education institutions, and is prepared to make more efforts in this field, based on its strategic objectives aimed at developing effective local, regional and international partnerships through sharing experiences and knowledge globally.

 

For her part, Suranyi expressed the desire of the University of Debrecen and the Hungarian National University of Public Service to cooperate with the JU, as the largest and most comprehensive in terms of disciplines in Jordan, and given its good academic reputation, in academic and research fields.

Northern Military Zone personnel foil smuggling, infiltration attempt

The Northern Military Zone on Monday foiled an attempt to smuggle large quantities of narcotic drugs from Syria into Jordan, according to a source at the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF).

 

The source said that rules of engagement in such incidents were applied and smugglers fled back to Syria.

 

Upon searching the zone, 353,000 Captagon pills, 150 palm-sized sheets of hashish, 1,388 Galica pills, 86 tramadol pills and half a kilogram of crystal were found, seized and referred to concerned authorities.

 

The source added that the zone personnel will not tolerate any infiltration or smuggling attempt and will always safeguard citizens and the Kingdom.

Mutah University president meets Qatari graduates from university

President of Mutah University, Arafat Awajan, met with a group of Qatari graduates from the university.

 

The meeting was held during Awajan’s recent visit to Qatar, upon an invitation by the Police College, to attend the graduation ceremony of the fourth batch of candidates.

 

Awajan said that Mutah University is proud of its graduates from brotherly and friendly countries, especially since many international students from Qatar in various academic programs and graduate studies had graduated from the university.

 

For their part, the students reaffirmed their pride in the university and its prestigious scientific and research level and commended its various programs.

 

Snaid Al-Marri, a PhD graduate, said that receiving the PhD from Mutah University contributed to his and his fellow launch with efficiency and scientific, research and practical excellence to serve their country in the field of their education, thanks to Mutah University which provided all forms of support to its graduates, overcoming all obstacles and challenges to offer them an educational and teaching environment that befits Mutah’s University, its heritage and scientific status globally and in the Arab world.

Mutah University president meets EU project representatives

President of Mutah University, Arafat Awajan, on Monday met with a delegation representing the European Union (EU) for the “JobJo” project.

 

The delegation visited career guidance and graduate follow-up office at the Deanship of Student Affairs at Mutah University.

 

The visit aims to check on services provided by the office to university students in the field of training to offer them professional skills that prepare them for the labor market, in addition to visiting the call center, through which new and active students are assisted in registration and academic inquiries.
