Industry and Trade Minister discusses ties with Romanian, US officials

Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yousef Shamali Saturday discussed during separate meetings with Romanian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Adrian Chesnoiu and a US Department of Agriculture official a number of issues related to cooperation in economic and food security fields.

The Jordanian and Romanian sides tackled ways of enhancing cooperation in the areas of food security, working to increase bilateral trade and stimulating the Jordanian and Romanian private sectors to launch investment partnerships that serve the two countries’ interests, according to a ministry statement.

Shamali noted that Romania is one of the key markets from which Jordan imports many strategic commodities, including wheat, barley, meat and livestock, stressing the importance of cementing economic cooperation between the two countries and maximizing the benefit from available opportunities.

For his part, the Romanian minister stressed his country’s interest in forging closer economic relations with Jordan, especially in the areas of food security, trade, investment and the exchange of expertise.

In a meeting with Foreign Service Officer of the US Department of Agriculture Elizabeth Mello, Shamali commended continued US support of Jordan, which, he said, helped to boost the national economy in the face of challenges.

He said that the United States is one of Jordan’s most important economic and trading partners, noting that relations took a boost, thanks to a signed free trade agreement between the two countries.

Ayla Oasis Development Company has held the first of its kind training workshop on mosaic art in cooperation with the Directorate of Tourism of the Aqaba Governorate. The workshop comes as part of Ayla’s continuous efforts to support and develop the local community in the southern region.

The workshop, which was attended by 17 participants from community associations in Aqaba, falls within Ayla’s social responsibility strategy framework that supports initiatives aimed at developing the local community through the rehabilitation and training of young women and men while providing them with a new and important handcraft needed by the tourism sector in the port city to help them enter the labor market.

Ayla’s Managing Director, Sahl Dudin said: “Since its establishment in the city of Aqaba, Ayla has been committed to implementing its societal role in addition to its economic and investment roles, with the aim of contributing to achieving the vision in creating comprehensive and sustainable development in the city. The mosaic training workshop is part of these efforts and reinforces the partnership principles between public and private sectors through our cooperation with the Aqaba Governorate Directorate of Tourism.”

Dudin stressed the importance of the workshop, which is the first of its kind in the mosaic art training field in the Aqaba governorate, pointing out that on one hand, this workshop will help teach the young a new craft and profession that will help them enter the labor market, and on the other hand, it sheds light on the history of mosaic art going back to Roman and Byzantine ages.

For his part, Director of Tourism in the Aqaba Governorate, Imad Rawahneh, confirmed that the partnership with Ayla is a model for the public and private sectors, pointing out that this partnership was reflected in the joint cooperation and the holding of various workshops in a way that serves the development goals in the Aqaba Governorate.

Rawahneh pointed out to the importance of the workshop in qualifying the youth and easing their entry to the labor market, in addition to exporting the mosaic paintings they produce abroad.

EDCs open to receive subscribers to register for subsidized electric tariff-Energy Ministry

Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Spokesperson, Mashhour Abu Eid, said offices of electricity distribution companies (EDC) are open on Saturday, to help applicants to benefit from the subsidized electric tariff.

Abu Eid called on subscribers, who have not yet registered on the electric tariff platform via the website kahraba.gov.jo, to benefit from the support and avoid increase in their electricity bills.

The process of receiving requests to benefit from the subsidized electric tariff in the household sector continues without a time ceiling, despite the start of the implementation of the new electricity tariff at the beginning of April 2022, Abu Eid pointed out.

In addition, Abu Eid noted subsidy eligibility is not related to the amount of electricity consumption, adding that if eligible subscribers’ monthly amount exceeds 600 kilowatt-hours, the beneficiary will continue to receive the gov’t subsidy applied to the first subsidized tranches.

Earlier, the Kingdom’s electricity distribution companies announced their readiness to provide assistance to their subscribers to register on the electricity subsidy platform.
