Jordan to host emergency meeting on Israeli violations in Jerusalem

Jordan is poised to host an emergency meeting of the Arab Ministerial Committee in charge of international action to encounter Israeli violations in occupied Jerusalem this Thursday.

The meeting will discuss the Israeli authorities’ escalation and transgressions in the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif in occupied Jerusalem and necessary action.

The committee, chaired by Jordan, comprises; Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the State of Palestine, Qatar, Egypt and Morocco. The United Arab Emirates, as a member of the Security Council, will participate in the committee meeting in Amman, which will be attended by the Secretary-General of the Arab League.

Furthermore, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Safadi Safadi, continued Jordan’s efforts to formulate an effective and pressing international position to stop the illegal Israeli measures in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He met with the ambassadors of the European Union and European countries in Amman.

He warned of the gravity of the situation in occupied Jerusalem, stressing the need to launch an immediate international action to pressure Israel to stop violating the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to respect the historical and legal situation in the city.

Safadi, who is Deputy Prime Minister, said the historical and legal situation in Jerusalem means that the Jordanian Jerusalem Islamic Waqf is the only entity charged with allowing non-Muslim visitors into the holy Mosque.

He stressed that maintaining calm, for which everyone worked, requires respect for the historical and legal situation in the sanctuaries and the right of worshipers to practice their religious rites during the month of Ramadan, as well as the cessation of all illegal measures and restrictions on Palestinians.

Safadi emphasised that tension will continue and escalate if a real political horizon is not found to realise peace based on the two-state solution, warning that the current situation in which prospects for progress towards a peaceful solution are absent and economic challenges for the Palestinians are exacerbated cannot continue.
