The government is accelerating the launch of a JD150 million tender to upgrade the King Hussein Bridge border crossing in order to facilitate two-way travel and increase the entry point’s capacity, Minister of Transport Wajih Azaizeh said Wednesday.
The minister told a joint meeting with Interior Minister Mazen Faraya and Palestinian Minister of Transport and Communications Assem Salem, that Jordan is committed to easing travel procedures for Palestinians using the King Hussein Bridge and the Queen Alia International Airport.
In turn, the Palestinian minister stated that his visit to Jordan was ordered by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh in order to discuss solutions to the problems encountered by Palestinians while crossing the border.
He said: “The new Israeli airport is of no importance to the Palestinians, government, or people. Rather, their Jordanian and Arab depth is the only thing that matters.”
A tender to pick a consultancy body for the joint Jordan-Iraq economic zone project was awarded to Jordanian Madi and Partners Consulting Engineers (MPCE) after its financial and technical bid received the highest rating from Jordanian and Iraqi firms, Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yousef Shamali announced.
In a press statement on Wednesday, Shamali said scientific and technical methods were used to assess tenders floated by the Iraqi-Jordanian Company for Industry to choose a consultant for the joint economic zone.
The company, after completing the referral procedures, will begin work requirements to outline the necessary studies and designs and prepare tender documents to attract a developer for the project, he said.
By referring the bid, he noted Jordan and Iraq have started the procedural and executive steps of the project, which the two countries aspire to enhance joint economic cooperation in various fields and bring about the required development in the regions of western Iraq and eastern Jordan.
This process, he said, comes in implementation of Jordan, Iraq leaders’ directives and visions and the outcomes of the tripartite summits that brought them together, in addition to the Egyptian president.
The project constitutes an opportunity to build Jordanian-Iraqi economic integration in many fields, especially industrial domains, he said.
After its completion, he noted the economic zone will benefit its products and industries from exemptions and priviliges of free trade agreements (FTA) signed by Jordan with many countries bilaterally or multilaterally.
FTAs allow Jordanian products access more than one billion consumers without any technical or customs restrictions, including the two countries’ markets, as the products manufactured in the new project will take the joint origin status, he pointed out.
The project is located on the the two countries’ border and has been allocated an area of 20,000 dunumms on both sides.
A Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) pilot managed to eject safely from his fighter jet before it crashed on Wednesday in an unpopulated area south of the Kingdom, according to a statement by the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army.
The plane was on a routine training flight, according to the statement, which also stated that the pilot was taken to the King Hussein Medical Center in Amman for additional medical testing. His condition was described as stable.
Minister of Education, Wajih Owais, stressed the importance of benefiting from distinguished people’s expertise in developing Jordan’s teaching process, which would be reflected in improving school activities and administration.
During a meeting of Ministry of Education’s institutionalization committee with Association of Queen Rania Award for Excellence in Education (AQRAEE), Owais said the ministry is keen to strengthen joint partnership and continue providing support to AQRAEE to maintain its role in a bid to improve Jordan’s educational process.
Owais also noted importance of integrating AQRAEE outcomes within the ministry’s programs to spread a culture of excellence and achieve the “greatest and deepest” effect on Jordan’s educational field.
For his part, the ministry’s Secretary-General for Educational Affairs, Nawaf Ajarmeh, said AQRAEE’s outputs achieved “positive” impact, which reflected on student-related services in the classroom.
All stakeholders partner to provide an environment of creativity and excellence for the ministry’s institutionalization project, which runs consecutively for the fourth year, to invest potentials of distinguished students in the educational process, he said.
Meanwhile, AQRAEE Chairman, Ezz El-Din Katkhuda, thanked Ministry of Education for its support as a major partner, hailing its “unrelenting” efforts to invest all opportunities to establish a culture of educational excellence within its regulations and instructions.
