Ministry launches Low-Carbon Pathway for power sector in Jordan

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has launched the Low-Carbon Pathway (LCP) for the power sector in Jordan, prepared in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

According to a statement issued by Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh on Thursday, the LCP will give a set of detailed sector-specific policy and technological recommendations to establish and implement a low-carbon pathway as part of Jordan’s moves toward climate resilience.

He noted that renewable energy sources can decarbonize 90 percent of the electricity sector by 2050, significantly reducing carbon emissions and aiding in climate change mitigation.

“Jordan ranks high in the global use of solar energy with its advanced sustainable renewable energy systems and aims to become a regional center for the exchange of electric energy, primarily due to its strategic location,” he said, adding that work is underway to improve the electricity network’s infrastructure in order to develop regional electrical interconnection projects.

The minister highlighted efforts to improve energy efficiency in various sectors by 9 percent of average consumption in 2018, as outlined in the Energy Strategy for 2020-30.

“Until the end of July, the total capacity of installed renewable energy generation projects stood at 2,526 megawatts, a share of 29 percent compared to 26 percent in 2021, while energy generated from installed renewable energy capacity amounted to approximately 5.5 terawatt hours by the end of 2021,” he added.

Kharabsheh hailed the EBRD’s efforts to support development in Jordan, particularly in the energy sector.

On Wednesday, Jordan approved the National Response Plan to Climate Change 2022 – 2025, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Jordan to contribute to the global effort to achieve climate stability.

“Jordan was one of the first countries to partake in this one-year project, which witnessed a large number of participants and achieved its goals,” said the minister.

He explained that the project’s launching came in conjunction with the National Tourism Strategy last year, and the Social Inclusion Plan, which was prepared while taking into account women’s challenges in the tourism sector.

Private sector representatives and ministry staff participated in the Center Stage project’s training program, he indicated, adding that workshops were held in northern and southern Jordan to introduce the project and interconnect and train women from the public and private sectors.

Under Royal directives, Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court Yousef Issawi, head of the follow-up committee for the implementation of His Majesty’s Initiatives, on Thursday attended the launching ceremony of the training-for-employment initiative in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, which aims in its first phase to train and employ 25 youth in Jordan’s central region.

The launching ceremony, which took place at the Royal Hashemite Court (RHC), in the presence of the Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Ahmed Hanandeh, saw signing two agreements between Arab Bank, as a financier and employer, and Broccoli for Capacity Building, as the supervising authority on implementing the initiative.

Agreements with seven companies from the private sector, which would employ the trained young graduates of the ICT sector, were also inked.

The initiative targets unemployed ICT alumni after completing 144 hour- training in the required skills, in addition to 3-month practical training in the seven companies, which are scheduled to employ youth in the pre-announced job opportunities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Issawi said this initiative in the ICT sector is in line with Royal vision, as His Majesty King Abdullah II attaches great importance to this business, as a vital industry and a tool for modernizing economic and social life, accessing labor market and expanding the base youth’s participation in innovative projects.

This sector is a way for entrepreneurship to employ young people’s skills to present their entrepreneurial projects, which will “positively” reflect on achieving a better future for them, Issawi added.
