FM, US Secretary of State discuss consequences of storming Al-Aqsa Mosque

Amman, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday discussed with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken the dangerous consequences of storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif by the Israeli Minister of National Security.

In a phone call with his US counterpart, Safadi called for mobilizing efforts to preserve the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites and to prevent the inevitable escalation that will worsen if Israel’s violations continue.

Safadi said that what the region needs is a real effort to find a political horizon for resolving the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, and not more provocative and escalatory measures that try to impose extremist agendas and threaten to trigger new cycles of violence.

Safadi underlined the centrality of the US leading role in efforts to stop unilateral measures that undermine the two-state solution, and in perpetuating calm and putting the peace process on a path that leads to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.

The foreign minister expressed appreciation for the clear position declared by the US administration on the need to respect the historical and legal status quo in holy sites and the Hashemite custodianship over them, and on emphasizing the need to stop unilateral measures that push towards escalation and undermine the two-state solution.

The two ministers said that Jordan and the United States will continue their joint efforts to re-launch serious and effective negotiations to achieve a just, lasting and comprehensive peace, which is a regional and international necessity based on the two-state solution.

The two ministers also reaffirmed the robust Jordanian-American partnership and the two countries’ keenness to deepen cooperation in various fields.

In the phone call, both ministers highlighted regional and international issues and the efforts exerted to solve crises in the region and establish security and stability.

Safadi also expressed appreciation for the US support to Jordan to empower its economic path and to deal with the repercussions of regional crises.

Blinken said that his country appreciates Jordan’s role and King Abdullah’s efforts to establish security, stability and peace.

World food prices hit record high in 2022: FAO

Amman, World food prices eased in December marking the ninth consecutive monthly fall, but gained more than 14 per cent in 2022 compared to the previous year, to reach the highest since records began, the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) said on Friday.

The FAO’s food price index, which tracks international prices of the most globally traded food commodities, averaged 132.4 points last month compared with a revised 135.00 points for November.

For 2022 as a whole, the benchmark index averaged 143.7 points, up 18 points or 14.3 per cent from 2021, and the highest since records started in 1990.

The decline in the index in December was driven by a steep drop in the international price of vegetable oils, together with some declines in cereal and meat prices, but mitigated by slight increases in those of sugar and dairy, the FAO said.

Food prices surged after Russia’s military operations in Ukraine in February last year on fears of disruptions to Black Sea trade. They have pared gains in part because of a UN-backed grain export channel from Ukraine.
