The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Monday signed a cooperation agreement to implement a project to expand innovation in water management for climate security in northern Jordan.

The project aims to devise innovative solutions to achieve water security and carry out pilot water security projects in the governorates of Jerash and Mafraq through working with small- and medium-sized companies and individuals concerned with innovation in the sector to achieve sustainable water security, according to an RSS press release.

The project, the RSS said, is meant to help achieve “multiple sustainable development dimensions” through generating more job opportunities for Syrian refugees and host communities in Mafraq and Jerash, and ensure women’s full participation in the project as a model that can be replicated and expanded toward achieving long-term sustainable development.”

The project is part of the regional SDG Climate Facility project: Climate Action for Human Security in the Arab States project funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the UNDP, said the statement.

It pointed out that the SDG Climate Facility project is a multi-partner platform that focuses on the effects of climate change on human security in the Arab region, especially in the countries experiencing conflict.

The UNDP is partnering with the Arab League, the Arab Water Council, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), the Habitat Programme and the World Food Programme to offer solutions to address climate challenges and achieve co-benefits through the sustainable development goals, it stated.
