AKEED Reports 24% Decrease in Rumors for June, Social Media Remains Leading Source

amman: The Jordan Media Credibility Monitor (AKEED) documented a notable decline in the number of rumors circulating in June, with a total of 92 rumors, marking a 24% decrease from the 121 recorded in May. Social media platforms were identified as the primary source, accounting for 73.91% of these rumors.

According to Jordan News Agency, AKEED, which operates under the Jordan Media Institute and receives funding from the King Abdullah II Fund for Development, highlighted that social media continues to be the main driver of rumor dissemination. This trend underscores the rapid spread of digital content and the challenges posed by insufficient platform controls to limit misinformation and associated hate speech.

The report also observed a shift in the focus of rumors from political and regional issues to more domestic topics. Notably, there was increased attention on Jordan's national football team and its prospects in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Public affairs emerged as the most frequent subject, with 21 rumors making up 22.83% of the total. Political and social issues were next, each with 20 rumors or 21.74%, followed by economic issues with 17 rumors or 18.48%. Health-related rumors accounted for nine instances or 9.78%, while security-related rumors were the least common, with five or 5.43%.

The analysis revealed that 68 rumors were spread via social media platforms, while 24 or 26.09% were propagated by various media outlets. Additionally, 76 rumors, representing 82.61%, had domestic origins, whereas 16 or 17.39% were traced back to external sources.

AKEED noted an increasing connection between rumors and events that garner significant public interest. The scope of these rumors has broadened to encompass not only politics but also sports, public services, and health. The monitor recorded 47 official statements issued in June by government institutions, public bodies, professional associations, societies, and federations. These efforts highlight ongoing institutional attempts to counter misinformation and mitigate its spread.

AKEED is committed to publishing periodic reports that are based on rigorous daily, monthly, and annual monitoring of rumors, as well as the verification of misleading and inaccurate information circulated through media channels.
