Aqaba: The Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Investment at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), Muhammad Abu Omar, announced that the Cabinet's decision to slash permit and licensing fees for public transportation in Aqaba by half is expected to reduce operational costs and enhance service quality.

According to Jordan News Agency, Abu Omar stated that the reduction in fees will apply to taxis as well as medium and large buses operating within the governorate. He emphasized that the introduction of a new smart application system signifies a significant transformation in Aqaba's transportation sector. This app will allow both visitors and residents to access services at transparent prices, ensuring more disciplined and reliable operations.

Abu Omar explained that the new system is designed to regulate fares and improve safety standards compared to traditional methods, which often faced issues like inconsistent pricing and limited oversight. He further outlined that the Authority's strategy to modernize Aqaba's transport sector includes enhancing infrastructure, organizing parking areas, and strengthening the monitoring and supervision of operators. This comprehensive approach aims to establish a state-of-the-art transport system that matches Aqaba's growing tourism and economic stature.

He also mentioned ongoing projects, such as the rehabilitation and development of the internal bus complex behind Princess Salma Park, which is expected to be completed by the end of October. Additionally, a tender has been issued for the development of the bus park in the ninth residential area to alleviate congestion and better organize bus parking for tourists and visitors.

Furthermore, Abu Omar reported that designs are in progress for developing the external travel and bus complex opposite the internal one to provide essential services to passengers. According to ASEZA figures, Aqaba's public transport network comprises 89 buses operated by various companies and 517 licensed taxis.
