Aqaba: Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) has officially obtained the Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification issued by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), marking it as the first port in the Middle East to join the accredited European EcoPorts network.
According to Jordan News Agency, this global recognition serves as "clear evidence of the container port's commitment to implementing the best international environmental standards." The certification was awarded following an integrated assessment process that included a comprehensive review of all applicable environmental policies and practices.
The assessment verified the terminal's possession of an integrated environmental policy, a thorough analysis of environmental risks and legal obligations, clarity of roles and responsibilities, provision of necessary resources, and submission of accurate eco-reports. The process also required disclosure of environmental practices implemented within the container port, aimed at maintaining a clean marine and land-based work environment and ensuring full compliance with environmental requirements.
Commenting on the achievement, ACT CEO Harald Nijhoff expressed pride in receiving the ESPO certification, describing it as a milestone that confirms Aqaba Container Terminal's commitment to environmental responsibility and operational excellence. Nijhoff emphasized the terminal's role as a leader in shaping a more sustainable future for the Middle East and the world, attributing the achievement to the dedication of the entire team.
Nijhoff further elaborated that the achievement followed the ACT's successful completion of a rigorous external audit process. This process spanned a lengthy period and involved a detailed review of all procedures and documents, with more than 64 supporting pieces of evidence submitted to confirm the terminal's commitment to implementing the elements of the EPA-certified environmental system.
According to the statement, this milestone represents an important step in the ACT's vision to consolidate its role as a sustainable logistics hub. It supports the green economy, aligns with global trends in environmental protection, and enhances operational efficiency through environmentally friendly methods.
