Amman: Breast cancer accounts for 39% of all cancer cases among women in Jordan, as reported during a recent event. More than 1,700 new cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed annually over the past three years, according to Dr. Riyad Shayab, Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Health for Primary Health Care and Epidemics. According to Jordan News Agency, during a ceremony held on Tuesday to honor the liaison officers of the breast imaging units, Dr. Reem Ajlouni, Director of the Jordanian Breast Cancer Programme, highlighted the critical statistics from the National Cancer Registry. Ajlouni praised the effective partnership with the Ministry of Health and the substantial efforts in providing health services to Jordanian women. Ajlouni emphasized that early detection remains a "major" challenge, yet it is crucial for increasing the chances of controlling the disease. She stated that while the demand for early screenings has improved significantly in recent years, according to available data, ongo ing efforts are essential to reach more women and ensure early diagnosis. There are over 95 mammography units across Jordan in both the public and private sectors, Ajlouni mentioned, adding that the programme provides two mobile clinics offering free mammography services. Moreover, Dr. Abdullah Matouq, Head of the Cancer Control Department at the Ministry of Health, noted that global statistics underscore the importance of early breast cancer detection, which can boost survival rates to 95% within the first five years.
