Amman: The Council of Ministers has announced the dissolution of municipal councils, governorate councils, and the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), effective July 7, 2025. This decision marks a significant step towards reforming local administration and municipal governance.
According to Jordan News Agency, the government's decision is part of a broader initiative to reform legislation and regulations pertaining to local governance. The process began in early June with a series of meetings aimed at discussing recommendations from the Royal Committee for Modernising the Political System on Local Administration.
These discussions are set to continue, focusing on legislative proposals designed to enhance municipal and local governance. Key areas of focus include improving transparency, strengthening financial and administrative accountability, addressing challenges faced by municipal authorities, and promoting good governance principles to improve public services.
The decision to dissolve the councils aims to uphold transparency, integrity, and neutrality, particularly in preparation for the upcoming elections.
