Canada reports 123 COVID deaths, 8,340 infections

The Canadian health authorities Sunday reported 123 COVID-19 deaths, taking the death toll to 34,716.

Health Canada said 8,340 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, as the caseload tops 3.1 million.

Jordan, US talk ties, partnership (Correction)

Ayman Safadi, the foreign minister, Saturday met with US top officials in Amman to discuss Jordan-US ties and partnership.

US Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Middle East and North African Affairs Barbara Leaf, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Yael Lempert and Safadi discussed the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the two countries’ partnership, which replaces the previous one that ends at the end of September.

Safadi, who is also the deputy prime minister, praised the US for its support for Jordan, highlighting its importance for the Kingdom’s development efforts, as well as its efforts in grappling with the challenges of hosting refugees.

The US delegation reiterated the two countries’ “strategic relations” and Washington’s keenness to continue supporting the Kingdom.

They lauded Jordan for its contribution to upholding regional security and stability.

At least four dead in coal mine collapse in Pakistan

At least four miners were killed and five others wounded in a coalmine collapse in Baluchistan district in southwestern Pakistan, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

The APP reported that the Pakistan Crisis Response Commission said the incident happened when a gas pipe exploded in the mine located near the city of Quetta, the district’s capital. It added that the rescue team transferred the injured to hospital.

Amman, Doha discuss creating 20k job opportunities for Jordanians

Labor Minister Nayef Istitieh, on Friday, along with Qatari counterpart Ali al-Marri discussed creating 20 thousand job opportunities for Jordanians in Doha.

Discussions at the Prime Ministry on Friday, witnessed the participation of the ministers of education, higher education, tourism, interior, health, digital economy, investment, youth and social development, in addition to the Qatari ambassador in Amman.

It covered the linking of the “Qatar” platform with the “Sajil” platform in Jordan to hire thousands of Jordanians upon the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Petra’s Treasury lights up in blue on World Cancer Day

Petra’s ancient Treasury lit up today in blue to show solidarity with cancer patients and victims around the globe, marking the 22nd World Cancer Day Anniversary, on February 4.

The event, held under the patronage of HH Princess Dina Mired, Immediate Past President of the Union for International Cancer Control (2018-2020), was organized by the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, according to a PDTRA statement.

Princess Dina said, “The corona pandemic has affected us all indiscriminately. However, cancer patients have undoubtedly suffered the worst of the double burden of the impact of the coronavirus. Due to the focus on corona, many cancer patients have had their cancer treatment plans either delayed or cancelled.”

“That is why it is so important for everyone to join this World Cancer Day on Feb 4th to send messages of hope to all cancer patients worldwide. Having Petra light up on this day is truly a message of hope from one resilient monument to all resilient cancer sufferers,” she added.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Nayef Alfayez said: “The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is pleased and honored to support World Cancer Day. By lighting up the Petra ancient Treasury, we espouse to send a message of solidarity and hope to cancer suffers throughout our beloved kingdom.”

For his part, PDTRA Chief Commissioner Suleiman Farajat said that through this international occasion, the city of Petra sends a message of hope to all cancer patients around the world, stressing the PDTRA’s support for campaigns that give a prominent role to the ancient city.

World Cancer Day is organized by the Union for International Cancer Control.

Princess Ghida launches Jordan Defies Cancer campaign

HH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), launched a national awareness campaign titled “Jordan Defies Cancer,” on the occasion of the World Cancer Day which falls annually on February 4.

The campaign, which will continue until the end of this month, aims at encouraging the practice of cancer-prevention healthy habits.

On the occasion, Princess Ghida said: “We will continue to fight cancer every day, every hour and every moment of our lives until the day we beat cancer.”

The campaign focuses on encouraging individuals and institutions alike to change their daily behaviors, to contribute to raising the level of community awareness of a healthy lifestyle.

UK reports 254 more COVID deaths, 84,053 cases

Britain reported 84,053 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and a further 254 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, as numbers drifted lower following a wave of Omicron cases at the turn of the year.

The number of new cases in the past seven days was down 2.4 percent on a week before at 614,720, while the number of deaths was 3.4 percent down on the previous week at 1,766.
