Chile Declares Disaster Zone in Santiago After Torrential Rains

Santiago:Part of Chile's capital has been declared a disaster zone following severe rainfall that resulted in flash floods and mudslides, leaving at least six people injured and prompting evacuations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the declaration affects Las Condes, an affluent suburb in Santiago, enabling public agencies to take extraordinary measures for emergency assistance, damage assessment, and recovery support.

Heavy rain on Thursday caused water and mud to rush through streets, sweeping away vehicles and flooding homes. The Mapocho River also overflowed, making roads impassable and requiring emergency responses.

Las Condes Mayor Catalina San Martin reported that 14.4 centimeters (5.7 inches) of rain fell recently, nine times the average for October. This saturation heightens the risk of more flooding and landslides.

Among the injured is a one-year-old with fractures. Firefighters have evacuated over 1,000 people as emergency teams clear debris and restore access to affected areas.

A red alert has been issued by the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service for ten municipalities in the Santiago Metropolitan Region due to further landslide risks. Authorities are urging residents to adhere to safety instructions while assessments and responses continue.

The flooding has severely impacted homes and infrastructure, with crews working to remove debris and assist affected residents. The disaster declaration aims to better coordinate services and aid recovery efforts.
