Beijing: China on Tuesday expressed its support for Delcy Rodriguez, who has taken over as interim president of Venezuela following a US military intervention in Caracas that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.
According to Anadolu Agency - English, Beijing has emphasized its respect for Venezuela's sovereignty and independence, along with the arrangements made by the Venezuelan government as per its constitution and laws. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning conveyed this stance to reporters in Beijing, responding to queries about China's recognition of the interim government led by Rodriguez, as reported by the Beijing-based Global Times.
Delcy Rodriguez, who also serves as Venezuela's vice president and oil minister, was officially sworn in on Monday as interim president. This followed the US operation on Saturday in Caracas, which led to the capture of Maduro and Flores. They have been taken to the US to face charges in a New York court. Rodriguez, during her swearing-in ceremony before the National Assembly in Caracas, expressed her commitment by swearing allegiance to the late Hugo Chavez and lamented the situation involving Maduro and Flores.
In response to inquiries about potential Chinese sanctions against the US for its military action in Caracas, Mao Ning condemned the operation, stating that the US, as a permanent UN Security Council member, has ignored international concerns and violated Venezuela's sovereignty and rights. China, she asserted, firmly opposes such actions and supports the Security Council's role in maintaining international peace and security.
The New York Times reported, citing Venezuelan officials, that the US raid resulted in the deaths of approximately 80 people. Meanwhile, Maduro and Flores are currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. They appeared before US Judge Alvin Hellerstein, where they pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged cooperation with gangs labeled as terrorist organizations. Both have denied these charges.
Mao Ning further criticized the US for its actions against Maduro, arguing that prosecuting a sitting head of state undermines Venezuela's sovereignty and destabilizes international relations. She emphasized that no nation can prioritize its rules over international law, as reported by Xinhua News.
China has condemned the US raid, expressed shock, and demanded the immediate release of the Venezuelan president and first lady, urging Washington to ensure their safety.
