China’s BYD Overtakes Tesla as World’s Top EV Seller

Beijing: Chinese automaker BYD has surpassed American competitor Tesla to become the world's leading seller of electric vehicles for the calendar year 2025. BYD achieved this milestone by selling 2.26 million fully electric cars, marking a 28% increase from the previous year.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tesla reported deliveries of 1.64 million cars last year, aligning with its forecast of 1.6 million vehicles. This figure represents the company's second consecutive annual decline, showing an 8.6% decrease from 2024. In comparison to the fourth quarter of 2024, Tesla's deliveries in Q4 2025 were nearly 16% lower, with the company recording 495,570 deliveries in the final quarter of the previous year.

Furthermore, Tesla's overall vehicle production for 2025 decreased by 6.7% to 1.65 million units. The company's struggles were exacerbated by intense competition, particularly from Chinese EV manufacturers, and reputational challenges stemming from Elon Musk's controversial political statements. Tesla's shares experienced a significant drop in the first quarter of 2025, highlighting the challenges the company faces in maintaining its position in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
