Qatar’s Emir Engages with UAE and Saudi Leaders Amid Yemen Tensions

Doha: Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani engaged in discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia as tensions rise concerning the situation in Yemen. The emir's diplomatic outreach comes at a time when relations between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh are strained.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tamim held a phone conversation with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, focusing on regional developments and issues of mutual interest, as reported by the Emirati state news agency WAM. In another call, the emir discussed regional and international developments with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as covered by the Qatari state news agency QNA.

The diplomatic exchanges occurred shortly after Saudi Arabia accused the UAE of supporting the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Yemen to conduct military activities near the Saudi border. The UAE has refuted these claims, emphasizing its commitment to Saudi Arabia's security. This development follows increased tensions in southern Yemen, where STC forces recently took control of Hadramaut and Al-Mahra provinces, accounting for a significant portion of Yemen's territory.

In response, Yemen's presidential council canceled a defense agreement with the UAE and demanded the withdrawal of Emirati forces from Yemen, while also declaring a 90-day state of emergency. The council cited concerns over attempts to divide the nation as the reason for these actions. The STC, advocating for the separation of southern Yemen due to claims of marginalization by successive governments, faces opposition from Yemeni authorities who are committed to maintaining the country's unity.
