Church Leaders Collaborate on Vision for New Baptism Site Museum

Amman: The Council of Church Leaders in Jordan convened a significant meeting to discuss the vision and proposed content for the Baptism Site Museum. The focus was on developing a comprehensive museum narrative that encapsulates the site's religious, spiritual, historical, and cultural importance.

According to Jordan News Agency, the gathering, held at the St. Ignatius Academy for Knowledge Innovation in Amman, included several church leaders, Chairperson of the Baptism Site Development Corporation Tharwat Masalha, and Director General of the Jordan Museum and President of the Jordan Museums Association Ihab Amarin. Bishop Christophoros Atallah and Archbishop Iyad Twal opened the meeting, emphasizing the necessity of collaborative efforts to create museum content that reflects the Baptism Site's unique religious and historical significance, recognized worldwide as a major Christian pilgrimage destination.

Sadir Brooks, curator of the Baptism Site Museum, introduced the initial concept for the museum's exhibition plan. He outlined the main themes and narrative, the order of the exhibition halls, and strategies for delivering a comprehensive visitor experience at the Baptism Site.

Participants engaged in discussions about the central themes proposed for the museum narrative, such as "wilderness," "water," and "witness," along with the associated references and narratives. They also addressed the museum's central story, focusing on the baptism of Jesus Christ by St. John the Baptist, and examined the meaning and significance of baptism, historical and archaeological evidence related to the site, and the history of Christianity in Jordan from its earliest days to the present.

Additional discussions explored the proposed design of the exhibition halls and methods for presenting content, considering the diversity of churches and Christian traditions. The goal is to clearly and comprehensively convey the site's message to pilgrims and visitors worldwide.

The participants agreed to provide the museum project team with spiritual, biblical, and patristic references related to the baptism of Jesus Christ. This will enrich the exhibition texts and support the development of a comprehensive Christian narrative that respects the diversity of churches and reinforces the museum's spiritual message.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on transforming the proposed themes into integrated interpretive content, aiming to strengthen the museum's message and highlight the Baptism Site's religious, historical, and tourism significance.
