A conference was held on Tuesday to outline Jordan’s commitment to the United Nations Transforming Education Summit and its outcomes, held last year in response to a global crisis in education.
The “Post Transforming Education Summit” Conference was held through the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to mark the International Day of Education.
During the opening ceremony, Minister of Education Azmi Mahafzah said education is a fundamental human right due to its “unique ability to develop knowledge, behavior, and values needed in communities to build a just, sustainable, and prosperous future.”
Jordan’s commitment came as part of a response to the global post-pandemic education crisis regarding equality, comprehensiveness, and quality, he added, indicating the need to renew global financial and political commitment to education and forge ahead with achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
For his part, UN Resident Coordinator a.i. Dominik Bartsch noted the need for new education systems that enable youth and children to reach their full potential.
The conference was attended by around 80 participants from public and private organizations, development partners, civil society organizations, and young men and women, where a statement of Jordan’s commitment to SDG 4 was delivered. The participants discussed doubling efforts and attracting more partnerships to support Jordan in carrying out these commitments and putting them into action.
Jordan’s commitments to the summit include the generalization of phase two of kindergarten, providing a safe and enabling education environment with special care for children most likely to be excluded from education, adopting preventive measures for potential crises, and increasing investment in information management systems.
