Baku: Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah II, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II participated on Tuesday in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku. A royal court statement said Crown Prince Al Hussein delivered Jordan’s address at COP29, which is held with the participation of heads of state from around the world, as well as heads of delegation and representatives of international and economic organisations.
According to Jordan News Agency, Crown Prince Al Hussein emphasized the necessity of unified global action to protect the planet and highlighted the importance of acknowledging the value of every human life in the fight against climate change. He expressed concerns about the current state of the international community, pointing out the ongoing humanitarian violations and the need for a collective approach to climate, peace, and security challenges.
The Crown Prince drew attention to the environmental challenges faced by regions affected by con
flict, particularly Gaza, citing United Nations Environment Programme studies that reveal significant environmental damage. He urged for an inclusive approach to address the climate crisis, stressing the need for the international community to consider the intertwined nature of climate issues and refugee dynamics, referencing the Climate-Refugee Nexus Initiative launched by King Abdullah II.
Highlighting Jordan’s efforts in clean energy and climate-smart agriculture, Crown Prince Al Hussein underlined the strain on the country’s infrastructure due to the high refugee population. He called for global support and accountability in climate financing, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and trust within the international community to effectively combat climate change and its impacts.
The Jordanian delegation to COP29 included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Environment Minister Muawieh Radaideh, Planning Minister Zeina Toukan, Director of the Office of the Crown Prince Zaid Baqain,
and Jordan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Omar Nahar.
