EU Council President Reiterates Need for 2-State Solution in Middle East

Tirana: The European Council president has emphasized the importance of establishing the conditions necessary for a two-state solution in the Middle East.

According to Anadolu Agency, Antonio Costa made these remarks during his opening address at the 6th European Political Community (EPC) summit held in Albania. Costa highlighted Europe's responsibility to foster conditions conducive to a two-state solution, warning that neglecting this issue could destabilize Europe's neighborhood and diminish its moral authority globally.

Costa referred to the situation in Gaza as a humanitarian tragedy, pointing out violations of international law and the use of disproportionate military force. He expressed concern over the shift from international trade and economic cooperation fostering mutual prosperity to being used as tools of power and pressure.

Costa also addressed the challenges facing Europe's rules-based order, notably citing Russia's actions in Ukraine as a trigger for widespread conflict within the region. He called this conflict an attack on the international community and the principles upheld by Europe.

He concluded by urging Europe to boost defense spending and strengthen global trade and prosperity networks, cautioning against the lure of protectionism.
