Brussels: The European Union announced Monday that it is easing economic sanctions imposed on Syria's energy, transport, and banking sectors. In a statement, the EU confirmed that the decision of the Council of Foreign Ministers covers key sectors, including oil, gas, electricity, and transport.
According to Jordan News Agency, the decision will lift asset freezes on five entities: the Industrial Bank, Popular Credit Bank, Savings Bank, Agricultural Cooperative Bank, and Syrian Airlines. It allows the provision of funds and resources to the Central Bank of Syria.
The EU stated that the move aims to facilitate cooperation with Syria and its companies in critical areas such as energy and transport. It would enable financial and banking transactions essential for humanitarian purposes and reconstruction efforts.
The Council emphasized that it would continue to assess the situation and determine whether further sanctions can be suspended. It added that it monitors developments in Syria to ensure the measures remain appropriate.
