Brussels: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has emphasized the urgent need for increased military support to Ukraine following Russia's recent attacks on Kyiv, which resulted in civilian casualties and damage to the EU Delegation building. Speaking before a meeting of EU defense ministers, Kallas highlighted Moscow's blatant disregard for peace efforts, asserting that "Ukraine needs backup now."
According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas stated that the recent wave of Russian attacks demonstrates President Putin's disregard for peace initiatives, underscoring the necessity of applying pressure on Russia. She confirmed that the EU defense ministers would prioritize accelerating military aid to Ukraine and discussed the importance of the ammunition initiative, with a deadline set for the end of the year.
Kallas also addressed the preparations for post-peace agreement security measures, outlining the EU's potential contributions, including training missions and support for Ukraine's defense industry. Discussions on changing the mandate of these missions are ongoing, with some EU member states prepared to send troops.
Highlighting the role of sanctions, Kallas stressed the impact of energy and financial sanctions on Russia's access to capital. She also noted that the defense ministers would address broader security concerns, including Iran's nuclear program and its support for Russia.
Support for Ukraine was echoed by other EU defense ministers. Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson emphasized the importance of robust security guarantees for Ukraine, possibly involving US engagement. Jonson suggested that Sweden could contribute in the air or maritime domains, depending on Ukraine's needs.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken pledged military assistance, including the delivery of F-16 fighter jets, and called for stronger sanctions against Russia. Francken advocated for training Ukrainian soldiers outside Ukraine due to security risks.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene warned against trusting Putin, stressing the need for a strong Ukrainian army and continued pressure on Russia. She highlighted the effectiveness of secondary sanctions and confirmed Lithuania's significant financial contribution to Ukraine's military efforts.
