Washington: US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that crime in Washington, DC, has decreased significantly, highlighting an 87% reduction in carjackings following the deployment of the National Guard to the capital earlier this month.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump made these claims on the US social media platform Truth Social, which he owns. He stated, "Carjacking in DC is down 87%. ALL other categories of crime are likewise down massively since I got involved." Trump further mentioned his intentions to make Washington, DC, a "crime-free zone" within 14 days, which he remarked would be "far faster than scheduled."
Democratic Mayor of Washington, DC, Muriel Bowser had previously announced the 87% drop in carjackings, referring to it as the "most troubling" crime of 2023 compared to the same 20-day period last year. Bowser also reported a 15% decrease in overall crime, with declines in robberies, homicides, and other gun-related offenses. Additionally, she noted an increase in the seizure of illegal firearms in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Trump declared a "crime emergency" in Washington, DC, which resulted in the Metropolitan Police Department being placed under federal control. Nearly 2,000 National Guard troops were deployed to patrol the streets, aiming to curb the city's crime rates.
