New York: The European Union has issued a statement to the United Nations Security Council expressing deep concern over the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. The EU has highlighted the tragic number of civilian casualties and the pressing issue of starvation, stressing the necessity for the protection of civilians, including humanitarian workers and the safeguarding of civilian infrastructure such as medical facilities, schools, and UN premises.

According to European Union, there is an urgent call for Israel to completely lift its blockade on Gaza to facilitate immediate, unrestricted, safe, and predictable access for humanitarian aid. The EU emphasizes the importance of allowing the UN, its agencies, and other humanitarian organizations to operate independently and impartially to alleviate suffering and save lives. The EU has reiterated its stance that Israel must adhere strictly to its obligations under international law, particularly international humanitarian law.

Following a meeting of the EU Council of Ministers in June, a dialogue was initiated with Israeli authorities concerning the humanitarian situation in Gaza. As a result of these discussions, Israel has agreed to take steps to ameliorate the humanitarian conditions in the region.

The European Union continues to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages, aiming for a permanent cessation of hostilities. The EU extends its full support to mediators from the US, Egypt, and Qatar and condemns Hamas for refusing to release the remaining hostages.

The EU remains committed to achieving a lasting peace founded on a two-state solution, envisioning a future where Israel and an independent State of Palestine coexist peacefully and securely with mutual recognition. The EU pledges to support efforts towards this vision and urges all parties to avoid actions that could undermine its viability. In line with this commitment, the EU continues to back the Palestinian Authority and its reform initiatives.

The EU is also anticipating the upcoming High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, scheduled from July 28 to July 30.
