Amman, Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Mayor, Yousef Shawarbeh on Sunday launched the second phase of Project of Litter Separation & Sorting of Household Waste at Source at the capital’s Madinah neighborhood.
The project is carried out, with support of German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation or (GIZ), according to a GAM statement.
Shawarbeh was briefed from Director of Solid Waste Management Sector in Jordan, Gabriel Yanikosky, about cooperation with the GAM in the current waste project separation project and the advantages of using electric-powered vehicles to collect litter in Amman’s Madina area, and its contribution to alleviating traffic crises, reducing fuel consumption costs, and slashing emissions that contribute to climate change.
As part of the project’s second phase, GAM removed 90% of the metal containers and installed 20 green devices to sorting organic waste in the commercial area downtown Amman to transport vegetable and fruit litter to serve the organic fertilizer project, the statement said.
4 electric vehicles will transfer organic litter and 4 others are used for delivering recyclable materials. In addition, 8 electric carts are used in alleyways to collect waste in large containers, which will be then sorted, treated, or sent to Ghabawi landfill.
