Amman, Minister of Health Firas Hawari Saturday called for supporting the Arab Board of Health Specializations (ABHS) to develop the health sector in the Arab countries and improve health services for their people.

Hawari, who is ABHS acting chair, was addressing a symposium, part of the board’s forum held in the Dead Sea to celebrate the 45th anniversary of its founding and new graduates.

The minister stressed the importance of expanding specializations, accreditation, quality assurance, medical education and training, measurement and evaluation as well as continuous professional development.

Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the Arab League, reaffirmed support for the development of the work of the ABHS, one of the key achievements of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health since its establishment in 1978.

She said she looked forward to more cooperation to bolster the health sector in least developed Arab countries through professional development and capacity building of clinicians and health workers.

Abu Ghazaleh urged Arab governments to pursue the improvement of primary healthcare as a top priority, and thanked Jordan for hosting the ABHS in its temporary headquarters in Amman.

The forum is held in Jordan from 9 to 12 February, under the patronage of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II.
