Amman:The Jordan Enterprise Development Corporation (JEDCO) emphasized the crucial role of innovation and research and development (R&D) in enhancing the competitiveness and growth of Jordan's pharmaceutical industry.
According to Jordan News Agency, JEDCO Executive Director Ghaleb Hijazi highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among the Kingdom's public and private sectors, academia, and research institutions to transform research into marketable products and technologies. He made these remarks during a JEDCO workshop organized in partnership with the Amman Chamber of Industry and the Jordan Society for Scientific Research (JSSR).
Khaled Khraisat, a JSSR board member, noted that pharmaceutical exports exceed JD600 million annually, reaching more than 78 countries and representing over 70 percent of local production. The Economic Modernisation Vision aims to increase exports to more than JD2 billion and boost direct employment in the sector to over 16,000.
Bashar Yaghmour, representing the Amman Chamber of Industry, stated that pharmaceutical and medical supplies account for about 11 percent of manufacturing output and 40 percent of the local market. He reported that exports grew from JD435.7 million in 2020 to JD650.2 million in 2025, with a target of JD2.1 billion by 2033.
Challenges facing the sector include high R&D costs, lengthy product registration procedures, difficulties in commercializing research, and limited innovation funding. The workshop addressed these issues along with strategies to expedite the registration of innovative medicines, finance research and innovation projects, and strengthen ties between universities, research centers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
