Amman: Minister of Interior Mazen Faraya chaired a meeting of the Supreme Council for Traffic Safety Wednesday morning with the attendance of Public Security Directorate Director Major General Obaidallah Maaytah. Faraya emphasized the significance of the council's meetings in achieving its vision and assessing progress in traffic safety through legislation, procedures, and infrastructure development.
According to Jordan News Agency, Faraya urged the council to effectuate positive and practical changes in traffic safety and to standardize efforts among all parties involved by leveraging human, logistical, and digital resources. He highlighted the importance of partnership and collaboration among the entities.
The council approved a plan within the national traffic safety strategy, which includes 50 projects and 28 programs. Each initiative comes with a description card that outlines the required funding source, implementing bodies, and timelines. The council also addressed accident-prone areas, noting that 56 locations have been resolved and eight more are currently being dealt with. Additionally, financing within the 2026 budget for relevant authorities' projects was discussed.
The Public Security chief stated that road traffic management is a collective effort by all relevant authorities aimed at reducing road accidents. He assured that the directorate will provide all necessary expertise and data to support the council's success in its objectives.
The Assistant Public Security Director for Traffic provided a briefing on road safety and technology, showcasing the results of using Huawei HOLOWITS CCTV AI Camera, Traffic Management System (TMS), and AI-Driven Traffic Management Systems in smart cities. These technologies employ machine learning algorithms to predict traffic patterns and identify future issues.
Public Security studies on the impact of AI smart cameras indicated an increase in driver seatbelt usage, reaching 97.4 percent. Additionally, there was a decline in traffic fatalities in 2024, with an average of 1.4 fatalities per day, compared to 1.5 in 2023. A decrease in accidents in 2024 compared to 2023 was also reported.
