Ramallah: The Israeli army encircled the Ramallah and Birzeit areas in the West Bank on Sunday evening following an alleged car attack in the occupied territory, the army said. A military statement indicated that soldiers were dispatched to the Maayan Ateret area after reports emerged of a suspected ramming attack that resulted in light injuries to an illegal settler.
According to Anadolu Agency, troops quickly established roadblocks, encircled the areas of Ramallah and Birzeit, and initiated searches for the suspect involved in the incident. The army has stated that "the circumstances of the incident are under review," but further details have not been provided.
Tensions have escalated in the West Bank since the Israeli war on Gaza in October 2023. Reports indicate that Israeli forces and illegal settlers have been responsible for the deaths of at least 1,105 Palestinians in the occupied territory. Additionally, nearly 11,000 Palestinians have been injured, and around 21,000 have been detained since October 2023, according to Palestinian figures.
In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory illegal, calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
