Dozens of Palestinians were injured by Israeli troops early Monday during clashes with Palestinians in the north of the occupied West Bank, which broke out during army raids into the hometowns of Palestinian detainees who staged a jailbreak last week.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said in a statement that occupation forces carried out a dawn raid into the village of Kafr Dan, the hometown of Ayham Kamamji, one of six detainees who escaped from the high security Israeli jail of Gilboa, ransacked his home, arrested his brother and seized the mobile phones of relatives.

Troops also stormed the towns of Yamoun, west of Jenin, and arrested a cousin of Kamamji and also raided Yabad town and questioned family members of prisoner Monadel Nfiyat.

The raids touched off clashes with local youths in which the army fired tear gas and percussion grenades, causing dozens to suffocate.

Elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces shot and seriously wounded a Palestinian at a checkpoint near the Jewish settlement of Etzion, south of Bethlehem. The army claimed he tried to stab soldiers manning the checkpoint.

Four of the prisoners were recaptured by the occupation forces after last Monday’s prison break, which sparked a furious manhunt across Israel and the occupied Palestinian lands.
