Japan and Bulgaria Reiterate Support for Gaza Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict

Tokyo: Japan and Bulgaria reiterated their support Tuesday for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip amid Israel's ongoing actions in the Palestinian territory, according to a joint statement. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba hosted Bulgarian President Rumen Radev in Tokyo, where they exchanged views on global issues.

According to Anadolu Agency, the statement highlighted the enhancement of the bilateral relationship between Japan and Bulgaria, as well as their support for Ukraine in its war with Russia and condemnation of North Korea's nuclear development. The two nations also pledged to strengthen trade, innovation, and investment to improve economic security and resilience, with a commitment to free and fair trade.

Regarding the situation in Gaza, the leaders expressed concerns about the ongoing cycle of violence in the Middle East, which threatens regional stability and affects the lives of civilians. The statement emphasized the countries' support for the full implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, including the release of all hostages and the expansion of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

The leaders reiterated their commitment to global initiatives aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace based on a two-state solution consistent with international law. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 53,573 Palestinians killed since October 2023.

In a related development, last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
