Public transport means will receive about 5 million dinars over six months in a government subsidy to ease the impact of rising fuel prices and reduce costs on operators, according to Land Transport Regulatory Commission Director General Tariq Habashneh.

The amount will go to vehicles on long and short routes, where 776 buses, 3,475 medium vehicles and 1,021 service taxes operate, at a rate of 567,150 dinars per month, and an average of about 3.4 million dinars in six months, Habashneh told Petra in an interview.

The amount of 267,700 dinars per month, 1,606,200 dinars in total, will go to yellow cabs, which number 5,354, he said.

He said the government had approved the subsidy for public transport means to face rising fuel prices and avoid an impact on citizens.

Under the subsidy, each yellow cab will get 50 dinars per month and long-distance buses over 130 km will get 200 dinars per month each, while buses running routes less than 130 km will get 150 dinars each per month, Habshneh said.

The monthly subsidy of medium-sized buses operating on long routes exceeding 130 km is 150 dinars each, while the same buses running distances less than 130 km will get 110 dinars, he said.

Service taxes on routes over 130 km will get 80 dinars a month, while those on routes less than 130 km will get 50 dinars, Habashneh said.
